As you sift through the current Cadillac lineup, you’ll notice that there are no hybrid or electric vehicles currently available as new models. That’s because the last hybrid produced by Cadillac came nearly five years ago, in the 2016 Cadillac ELR. And while this might be considered a gap given the current state of the automotive world, Cadillac is poised to make big leaps forward in the coming years to help drive an electrified future. Not only can you find out more at Classic Cadillac of Birmingham, but we’ll be sure to keep you up to date on future news as we receive it!
When Was the Last Hybrid Cadillac Model Produced?
The last new hybrid Cadillac model to be found at our Birmingham dealership was the 2016 Cadillac ELR, a two-door luxury coupe that featured a bold design and luxurious interior to go along with it’s plug-in hybrid powertrain. The high shoulder line, crisp lines, projector LED headlights, and wide open grille all set the tone for future Cadillac design language, but the hybrid powertrain was unfortunately not long for the lineup. It featured an electric motor that was good for up to 40 miles of range, and a combustion engine that ran a generator to help keep the batteries charged for a further 340 miles. The combustion engine could be used under heavy loads to help produce a total of 217 horsepower in conjunction with the electric motors, while 188 pound-feet of instant torque would help you get things moving.
Will Cadillac Produce Another Hybrid Model?
Currently, Cadillac has plans to introduce a hybrid powered Cadillac Escalade sometime within the next year. It’s expected to be a plug-in hybrid model that allows for a fuel-free EV mode as well as a full-power option that combines both combustion and electric power to give you an extra boost when you need it. Current figures are unknown, but the plug-in hybrid game these days is about enhancing both power and efficiency, so expect to see much more impressive figures in the new Hybrid Escalade than what were found with the ELR of five years ago.
Does Cadillac Plan to Introduce an EV?
Yes, and it’s coming sooner than you think. The Cadillac LYRIQ has already been announced as Cadillac’s first foray into mass-market electric vehicles, and it is expected to ship early in 2022. Keep in touch with our Birmingham dealership to learn more as we get closer to release and be one of the first to take the new Cadillac EV for a test drive!
Will the Cadillac LYRIQ Have Good Range?
It’s still early, but estimates at the moment say that the 2022 Cadillac LYRIQ will offer 300 miles of range from a full charge. That puts it on the same level as the Mustang Mach-E and worlds ahead of the luxury models like the Porsche Taycan and Volvo XC40 Recharge. That puts the LYRIQ in a good position as the premium luxury EV option that sits toward the top of the EV range scale.
Will the Cadillac LYRIQ Be Fun to Drive?
Fun is in the eye (or hands) of the beholder, but there is certainly a fun factor to electric vehicles thanks to the instant torque delivery that you can’t get from a combustion engine. All of the power of an electric motor is available from a standstill, so you don’t have to wait for the RPMs to peak to get the aggressive acceleration and punchy feel you want when you put your foot down. While specific statistics on the LYRIQ have yet to be revealed, it is safe to say that Cadillac isn’t pulling any punches with its first electric powertrain.
